The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Major Alliance Formed By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Consultations Underway

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several major political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
